Superintendent Chad J. Shawger
Dear West Muskingum Community,
It is with great honor that I write to you as the new superintendent of this great district. It feels as though I am “coming home” as I started my educational career here at West, and I couldn’t be more excited to be back.
I was hired in 1997 at West Muskingum High School to teach Social Studies. Along with that, I also coached football, basketball, baseball, and golf during my nine years in the district. After obtaining my Master’s degree in administration I accepted a job as assistant principal at Crooksville High School. After one year, I was offered the same position at Tri-Valley High School and spent 10 years there serving as assistant principal, middle school principal, and the last four years as high school principal.
West Muskingum is a special place. I had the honor of working with some great people. What made them so great was their genuine caring for students, which is a legacy that continues. Whether it was feeding the team between practices, working at bingo to support the boosters, or supporting our students at extra-curricular events, the West Muskingum community always “shows up”. It is that enthusiasm that I have loved about West.
Our schools are a hidden gem. We have outstanding teachers and staff that care about students. We offer many educational choices so that our students can personalize their learning. The ability to be flexible in our teaching in a manner to benefit students is what sets West Muskingum apart, not only this year, but in years to come. Having worked with many of the teachers in the district I feel confident in saying that our students are in great hands.
Education seems to be changing by the day. Some of those changes are positive and some may not have positive outcomes for West Muskingum. One thing is for certain, when those changes impact West Muskingum in a negative way, our voice will be heard. Our community is passionate about education and as superintendent it is my responsibility to act on behalf of our students, staff, and community.
I have developed great relationships with many people in the West Muskingum community over my 20 years in education, and I can’t wait to continue those relationships while developing new ones in this great district.
I’m excited to get started and I look forward to seeing you at our various events.
Yours in education,
Chad J. Shawger
